Smoking in schools

Question for written answer E-002989-19
to the Commission
Rule 138
Theodoros Zagorakis (PPE)

Although the number of smokers in Europe has fallen sharply in recent years, the total number is still noticeably high, with almost one in three young people aged 15-24 smoking or occasionally using tobacco-related products.

High rates of smoking among young people and particularly adolescents are related, inter alia, to the hitherto inadequate ban in schools, where smoking is, in many cases, an open secret.

The Greek Government recently introduced a new programme to combat addiction to tobacco and drugs and to promote healthy lifestyles in schools.

Does the Commission have any information on good practices in other European countries that have implemented similar initiatives?

Which European funding tools are available to finance appropriate anti-smoking information campaigns?
