24 February: Ending Tobacco epidemic - an essential step for beating cancer

In the framework set by Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan, the European public health community is joining forces towards one common cause that affects so many people in every European Member State. As tobacco use still continues being the leading preventable cause of cancer, ENSP aims to prioritise tobacco control on the health agenda; and will launch a targeted discussion on Tobacco and Cancer with the following key message: "Ending tobacco epidemic - an essential step for beating cancer".
To that end, on 24th February ENSP will host a webinar with key stakeholders in the field: the European Commissioner for Health and Food Safety, Ms. Stella Kyriakides and the WHO Representative to the European Union, Ms. Oxana Domenti, as well as the Romanian Ministry of Health and representatives of major civil society organisations.

The webinar will be hosted on 24th February 2021, at 16:00 CET.
Save the date and register! The detailed agenda will be soon published at ensp.network.

Every year, 3.5 million people in the EU are diagnosed with cancer, and 1.3 million die from it. Over 40% of cancer cases are preventable. Without reversing current trends, it could become the leading cause of death in the EU. As the Commission released its Europe’s beating cancer plan with the aim to reduce the cancer burden for patients, their families and health systems the ENSP joins this fight with the 2021 Brochure. Tobacco is a great risk factor for cancer, often still unknown and underestimated. Thus, every month in 2021, ENSP dedicates a section of "The Network" to a certain type of cancer and its link to tobacco.

24 February: Achieving high compliance rates: Tobacco Control enforcement and implementation

Huge progress in tobacco control has been made in recent years by countries adopting strong policies recommended by the World Health Organization’s Framework Convention on Tobacco Control. Achieving high compliance rates means using evidence-based implementation and enforcement efforts.

You will have the chance to better understand the role of enforcement in achieving high compliance, hear implementation and enforcement case studies, and learn lessons from scaling-up.
