EC Consultation on smoke-free environments

Give your feedback!

On 22 June, the European Commission opened a new consultation related to the Council’s 2009 Recommendation on smoke-free environments that aims to protect people across the EU from exposure to second-hand smoke.

As announced in Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan, this initiative aims to bring the recommendation into line with market developments and include the use of tobacco and related products in certain outdoor spaces in its scope.

Notably, it aims to extend:

  • its coverage to emerging products
  • its scope to additional outdoor spaces (e.g. schools & playgrounds).
The call for evidence is open for feedback and you can share your views before 20 July 2022.

Save the Oceans from Tobacco's Toxic Plastics

New report available!

In celebration of World Oceans Day 2022, on the 08th of June, the Global Center for Good Governance in Tobacco Control (GGTC) has produced a global report entitled "Tobacco's Toxic Plastics: A Global Outlook" in line with this year's theme: "Revitalization: Collective Action for the Ocean".
The report entitled explains how uniquely toxic cigarette butts are due to their chemical and heavy metal content. The document also mentions that the tobacco industry knew that the plastic fibers of cigarette filters are causing a more aggressive form of cancer. According to the report, the tobacco industry’s tactics obscure the environmental and health harms it causes. Tobacco companies and tobacco-funded entities support anti-litter and related campaigns as means of self-promotion, marketing, and sponsorship, which are prohibited in many countries. In honor of World Oceans Day, GGTC joined the collective action of tobacco control advocates from across the world who are disseminating a country-specific environment brief entitled “How Should Tobacco Companies Pay for Pollution?” prepared by GGTC in collaboration with STOP, a global tobacco industry watchdog.

8 July: Stakeholders' webinar

EU4Health Programme 2021-2027

Another webinar is planned for all relevant stakeholders: NGOs, associations, businesses, Member States' policy makers, patients' organisations, etc. EU4Health Programme has been adopted in March 2021 with EUR 5.3 billion during 2021-27, an unprecedented level of financial commitment for a Union investment in health. The EU4Health Programme is the Union's response to the current public health emergency; it is expected to make a significant contribution to the post-COVID-19 recovery and aims to bring a contribution to the long-term health challenges by building stronger, more resilient and more accessible health systems.

Each year a targeted consultation is launched to seek the opinion of stakeholders about current and future EU health priorities and strategic orientations and on key health needs to be addressed through EU4Health annual Work Programmes, providing inputs for reflection on the Work Programme under preparation and beyond.

This webinar is the opportunity for the tobacco control organisations to provide their input on the importance of addressing the tobacco issue at the EU level and making it a priority for next Work Programmes.
